LEISTON U23’s head to Essex to play Stanway Pegasus on Saturday, looking to get back to winning ways after their fine five-game winning streak was ended by FC Parson Drove last weekend.
It's been an excellent start to the season by the young Blues, who sit second in the table, and boss Neil Smye is looking forward to the challenge of Stanway, currently sixth, saying it gives his coaching staff a chance to ascertain the progress his youngsters are making.
“It's been a good start. Seven games into the season and 15 points on the board, which included a five game winning streak," Smye said.
"Stanway, a team that beat us convincingly at the beginning of last season, with our young team giving a better account of themselves in the second fixture against Stanway we could see the progress the players were making.
“We hope to be more competitive this season in the league to see how much progress we have made as players and as a team. So our aim for this season is not only to get players through to the first team, but to also be able to adapt and adjust accordingly to team changes due to first team call ups, injuries and availability.
"This we have done on occasions, even when changing formations to suit the players available, solutions have been found and the players have adapted well to each challenge. So knowing these capabilities are within the players we will aim for a top half finish in the league."
Stanway have played six, won four and lost two in the league. They had a big win (5-1) at Gorleston Res last weekend.
Leiston U23’s have five matches coming up in September as they host Whitton United and Needham Market U23’s while they visit AFC Sudbury Reserves and FC Peterborough respectively. They also host Old Newton United in the Suffolk Senior Cup First Round.
