LEISTON U23’s are looking for a perfect week, with a third win on the bounce, when Whittlesey Athletic visit Victory Road.
A win over Haverhill Borough last weekend was followed by a fine 3-0 victory over Framlingham Town (who had won their opening two games) on Tuesday night lifted the youngsters up to 7th place in the early standings. After a goalless first half, the Blues stepped it up in the second period and goals from Cameron Rayworth (55 mins), Mackenzie Travis (69 mins) and Warren Buckman (80 mins) sealed the win.
Whittlesey Athletic are currently bottom of Thurlow Nunn North, losing to Haverhill Borough (3-0, A), and both at home to FC Peterborough (4-3) and Whitton United (3-2) so far.
Last season in Suffolk, the sides drew 1-1 with Charlie Atkin netting the Blues goal and Jones De Sousa on target for Whittlesey.
Blues manager Neil Smye spoke of his pleasure with the Framlingham victory: “The team briefing between coaches and players before the game on Tuesday was thorough with a clear game plan discussed with players having good input to ensure understanding," he said.
"There were some impressive individual performances coupled with a good work ethic which made for a mature performance from the team. Players worked hard to back each other out of possession to regain or be compact and defending the area well.
"Hopefully, we can get some consistency in our performances this season, although this is sometimes hard with a development squad that is very young due to players' holidays, part time work and players progression to the first team. But this gives opportunities to the emerging talent that is in the club to show that what they can also offer.”
