It was clear from the moment FC Peterborough kicked off that they were determined to win all three points to keep them in with a chance of making a play-off place. They attacked well down either flank delivering dangerous crosses.
Despite this the U23s defended well and were unfortunate to have a penalty awarded against them for what the referee considered to be handball. This despite the player having his back to play.
Marcus Mehew all but saved the kick having dived the right way to his left but the ball squirmed under his body trickling into the net. A measure of the visitor’s dominance in the half was that Ollie Griggs’ shot as half time approached was the first on target the U23s managed.
Half Time: U23’s 0-1 FC Peterborough.
The second half looked to have started well for the U23s when they won a corner but which was scrambled away by the visiting defence. Almost in their next attack the visitors doubled their lead when a defensive headed clearance fell to Liam Hatfield whose speculative shot from outside the home penalty area found its way just inside the post.
Marcus was forced into an excellent save when he turned a fierce shot over the bar to keep the deficit to two. Both managers made use of their substitutes in an effort to influence the game as it moved into the final quarter, but it was the visitors who again got the run of the ball to give them the opportunity to score a third goal which they duly did. In doing so it gave the visitors a somewhat flattering scoreline.
