FA Cup clash with Hornchurch awaits victors at Victory Road

'It’s an FA Cup game, under the lights at home, it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to put on a display and the fans to get right behind us.'
- Chris Wigger

BLUES boss Chris Wigger says his team know the task in hand as Leiston go in search of a place in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup tonight at Victory Road, 7.45pm kick-off.

Visitors, Brentwood Town, squared the tie up in the 89th-minute in Essex on Saturday to set up tonight’s clash. It was the second time they had come from behind to equalise and Wigger admitted it was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

“That’s the glory of the Cup, late equalisers, late winners, whatever way they come and sometimes you’re on the receiving end of them,” he said ahead of tonight’s game.

“It was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow to be honest with such a late equaliser.

“But to have a home tie tonight, rather than the reverse, bringing Brentwood over to us, I see that very much as a positive. And we’re looking to finish the job. We know the task in hand, and we know how close we came on Saturday. The boys will be looking to get the job done at home.”

Leiston are on a current good run of form which has seen them remain unbeaten in five, including three wins. Wigger wants to retain the good momentum.

“Our current unbeaten run is important,” he said. “We’ve turned a corner with this. I said in my programme notes, a positive result against Brentwood and then something away at Barwell on Saturday, we have the makings of the start of a little run which is a good thing to do at this stage of the season.

“If we can get something out of the next two games we will be in a very positive position.”

BLUES V BRENTWOOD … ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

And the Blues boss called on Leiston fans to continue to get behind the team.

“It’s important the fans get behind us like they always do,” he added. “It’s an FA Cup game, under the lights at home, it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to put on a display and the fans to get right behind us.”

The winners of the tie will be at home to Hornchurch on September 28.
