GEORGE Quantrell struck an injury time winner as Leiston deservedly picked up all three points at Bishop's Stortford.
Quantrell poked home after good work by Jamar Loza to seal the come-from-behind victory after Stortford had taken the lead through Jack Roberts on 58 minutes, only for Ben Fowkes to equalise for Leiston with 13 minutes to go.
It was no more than Chris Wigger's side deserved. They enjoyed dominant possession, especially in the first half, where they created a host of chances.
It sets the team up nicely for Boxing Day's big derby clash with Lowestoft Town at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium, kick-off 1pm.
Loza and Ismael Fatadjo came back into the side at Stortford as Albie Armin dropped to the bench along with Harley Curtis. Jack Manly also came into the squad after going out on loan to Maldon & Tiptree recently.
Kyran Clements, playing up front once again, won a free kick as early as the third minute and Fatadjo’s free kick went just wide of Elliot Krasniqi’s right hand post.
Four minutes later, and Quantrell was off target with his effort while Fraser Alexander forced Krasniqi into a good save to his left. Cameron Rayworth had an attempt cleared off the line while Rossi Jarvis went over in the area but no penalty was awarded.
The hosts had a good chance on 13 minutes but Lanrewaju Balaogun ballooned his chance over from six yards. Roberts then shot straight at Ellis Craven on the edge of the box.
The Blues thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Clements bundled the ball over the line after home keeper Krasniqi made a fantastic save, pushing Quantrell’s shot onto the bar, but after referee Jordan Crossley consulted with his assistant, the goal was ruled out for offside.
On the half hour, Clements nearly got on the end of Rayworth’s delivery while Loza dragged a strike just wide of Krasniqi’s left hand post. Late in the half, Quantrell, Fowkes (twice) and Rayworth all went close to breaking the deadlock as Leiston continued to create a host of chances.
Leiston looked as though they may rue not taking their chances as the home side took the lead in the 58th minute. After a long ball was cleared, Roberts beat Craven to the ball and put it over the Leiston 'keeper and into the the net.
Clements, Loza and Quantrell were denied by fantastic blocks on 64 minutes before, on 66 minutes, Craven made an outstanding save from Balogun from six yards to keep Leiston in the match.
Leiston kept playing well and on 77 minutes got their rewards. Another great run by Rayworth saw the Blues player cross from the right and Fowkes turned the ball into Krasniqi’s bottom right hand corner.
Craven saved a long-range strike on 79 minutes and Loza’s effort was on target on 88 minutes but Bishop’s Stortford again blocked before on 92 minutes, Loza rode a block tackle and crossed to Quantrell who made no mistake to net his 13th goal of the season.
