LEISTON head to Leicestershire this weekend to face Barwell in league action.

It will be Leiston’s first league game for 11 days after the Blues beat AFC Sudbury at home 3-2 on Tuesday 10th September.

An FA Cup Replay win on Tuesday night against Brentwood Town saw the Blues through to the 3rd Round Qualifying stage of the competition. Leiston will host Hornchurch next Saturday in the next round.

The Blues remain 15th in the league table after the last couple of weeks while Barwell are 19th (fourth from bottom) with five points from seven games.

Leiston lost their on their first three visits to Barwell, without scoring a goal. The first game the sides played at Barwell was in March 2019, which the hosts won 3-0 and later that year in October, Barwell won 5-0. Another defeat, this time in January 2022, ended in a 2-0 win to the Leicestershire side. However, in the Blues' last two visits to Kirkby Road, Leiston have won both times, 3-2.

In February 2023, goals from Ben Fowkes (2) and Will Davies secured a win while in September 2023, the Blues were 2-1 down with just a few minutes to go before a strike from distance from Eddie Jackson and a Wyatt Hill goal earned Leiston a good win.

Blues midfielder George Quantrell netted twice on Tuesday night against Brentwood. He has eight goals so far this season. He knows Barwell will be a good test.

“The football we are playing at times is really good, we’re not conceding too many goals either,” he said.

“It’s fun to play in, and nice to keep the ball on the ground, pulling teams about and creating chances. Yes, the two away games at Barwell and Bedford will be tough, but we are on a good run and will look forward to them.”

Leiston are indeed on their travels on Tuesday night at Bedford Town in the league (7.45pm kick off) before entertaining Hornchurch next weekend (Sat 28th Sep) in the FA Cup. They start October in Suffolk Premier Cup action, away at Bury Town in the First Round (Tues 1st Oct) and are in FA Trophy action on Saturday 5th October.
