The Blues came back from two goals down to defeat the ‘Eagles’ yesterday afternoon to stay in touching distance of Tamworth, who also won.
It is now one league defeat in 20 games for Leiston as they showed great mental strength and determination to get something out of the match.
The management team decided to stick with the same starting eleven as Tuesday night’s win against Ilkeston Town, so captain Seb Dunbar had to settle for a place on the bench.
Leiston actually started the game very brightly and on six minutes had a great chance to open their account for the day when Adam Mills ball from the left fed Will Davies but Harry Palmer saved well. Moment later and good play by Joe Marsden and Finlay Barnes allowed Will Davies to get a shot on goal once more, but his effort was well blocked. It was the hosts though who took the lead in the 10th minute. Good play on the left by Connor Tomlinson saw the play pull the ball across goal to Hugh Alban Jones who fired into Sam Donkin’s top left hand corner. Moments after the restart and Connor Tomlinson tried from the edge of the box, but Donkin was smartly down to his left. The Blues keeper was off his line well on 14 minutes to clear a long ball over the top. Bedford doubled their lead on 18 minutes when Tomlinson picked up a loose ball on the right this time and he looked up to place a ball across goal to Jermaine Howe and the striker made no mistake, shooting low to Donkin’s right hand side into the corner.
It would have been easy for Leiston to drop their heads at this point and they started to dictate a bit more of the play, with more passes being crisper and slicker across the ground into players feet. Shouts of a penalty were turned away when Adam Mills headed the ball into the ground and the ball hit a Bedford defender on the arm, and they game for a few minutes was played in the centre of the pitch with chances at a premium. A great ball by Joe Marsden on the right flank found Will Davies in the area and his header was nodded off the line but the lifeline came on 37 minutes as Finlay Barnes smashed home in-off the underside of the bar, after an excellent ball by Adam Mills, with Sam Warburton clearing the ball to Barnes. Two minutes later, and another Joe Marsden corner saw Adam Bailey-Dennis latch onto it, with the ball being stopped on the line, but Ben Fowkes made no mistake to put the ball home before Bedford could clear. The third goal came on 42 minutes, this time Mills again created space on the left and he whipped the ball in which Palmer failed to gather, and Davies was on hand to tuck home his 23rd goal of the campaign. Bedford try to get back in the match before the break, but failed to create a real chance and Leiston saw out five minutes of stoppage time to go in at the break ahead.
Two minutes into the second period, and Barnes this time had a shot deflected wide of goal for a corner while shortly after Will Davies shot over from 30 yards. A bad foul on Finlay Barnes by Hugh Alban Jones saw the player booked and Barnes got up to take the free kick but Palmer was out well to catch. Leiston switched off on 61 minutes in the middle of the park and this allowed for a ball to be played through to Connor Tomlinson, who played extremely well all game, and he took the ball into the area to fire past Donkin. Leiston, though, kept plugging away and Barnes ball into the box from a corner allowed Jake Hutchings to spring inthe box and out jump the home defence to nod last Palmer. Bedford struggled to create anymore attempts on goal, although Edward Gyamfi shot into Donkin’s left hand side netting with fifteen minutes to go. Leiston were now playing confidently and Joe Marsden shot wide in the 84th minute as the clock ticked down. With six minutes of stoppage time nearly up, Adam Mills received two yellow cards for an incident near the home team bench and when play resumed and Leiston cleared a ball into the area, referee Luke Scott blew for full time.
This was another fine win but Leiston will continue to take this season one match at a time.
There is now a 17 point gap between the Blues (2nd) and Hitchin Town (6th).
