LEISTON head to Bury Town in the first round of the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup on Tuesday night.
The game has been postponed a couple of times this campaign after the Blues had FA Cup replays in the week to contend with.
Baring club captain Seb Dunbar, Leiston boss Chris Wigger should have a full squad to deal with as the Blues enjoyed a rare weekend off on Saturday afternoon.
Bury Town versus Leiston is one of just two first rgames, with an Ipswich Town XI defeating Stowmarket Town in the other tie on penalties. The winners of the Bury/Leiston match will be at home to Lowestoft Town in Round 2.
NEW DUGOUTS IMPRESS AT VICTORY ROAD
Leiston and Bury have enjoyed some good encounters in the Suffolk Premier Cup over the seasons.
Bury defeated Leiston in the semi-finals of the competition in March 2012. The match finished 1-1 after extra-time, with Luke Hammond getting a late equaliser before the teams couldn’t be separated after a further 30 minutes at Bloomfields. Bury won the shoot-out 4-2 on spot kicks.
In March 2013, the teams met again at Needham Market FC in the semi-finals and although Rhys Henry gave Leiston the lead, Bury got two goals to go in front and they held on for a 2-1 win.
For the third year on the bounce, the sides met in March 2014 at AFC Sudbury and the West Suffolk side again won 2-1, with Craig Parker scoring a late consolation goal for Leiston.
However, the sides were paired together in the first round in October the same year, with Leiston winning at Victory Road, 3-2. Craig Parker, Gareth Heath and Leon Ottley-Gooch all netted on the night while Joe Benjamin and Jordan Patrick were on target for the away side.
The last competitive meeting between the two sides came more than six years ago, in May 2018, when Leiston won 3-0 against in the final of the competition at Portman Road. Christy Finch (2) and Matt Blake were on target that night.
Bury Town were formed in 1872 and have a capacity of 3,500 (300 seated). Their current manager is Cole Skuse, who made nearly 300 appearances for Ipswich Town between 2013 and 2021, in a career that brought him more than 600 Football League appearances.
Bury Town have reached the FA Cup first round twice in their history in 1968-69 and 2008-2009. Dick Raynor is their record appearance maker with 610 games while their highest scorer is Doug Tooley, who netted 251 goals over nine seasons.
It will be the Leiston's 11th away game of the season at Ram Meadow. They can look forward to a home game in the league on Saturday when Stamford visit Victory Road.
Bury are currently third in the Isthmian North league table but lost 2-0 at the weekend at home to Waltham Abbey.
Bury Town have ex Blues keeper Charlie Beckwith in their ranks now whilst Cemal Ramadan has also played for Bury since 2018 after moving back to the club from the Blues.
