LEISTON head to Essex at the weekend as they play Brentwood Town in the Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying.

A good 3-2 win in the rain on Tuesday night at home to AFC Sudbury helped secure a second league win of the season and meant Leiston moved up a place into 15th, with nine points now on the board from seven games. Blues captain Seb Dunbar continued his road back from fitness after coming on as a 74th minute sub.

Brentwood Town went down 2-1 at home to Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday night in league action. They are currently 13th in the Isthmian Division One North, and last season lost to Bowers & Pitsea in the Play-Off Final.

In the FA Cup this season, Brentwood have beaten Ware (1-0, A) and Enfield (5-0, A) in the Preliminary and First Round Qualifying Rounds.

Leiston have played Brentwood Town before in an FA competition. They lost to the Essex side away from home 1-0 in an FA Trophy match in September 2011. But Leiston defeated Brentwood Town twice that season in the league. The Blues won at home before, in March 2012, Rhys Henry’s goal helped Leiston to a 1-0 away win. Leiston also beat Brentwood Town twice in the 2015/2016 season.

Brentwood Town were formed in 1954 and are currently managed by Keith Rowland. Brentwood Town reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1886, losing to Blackburn Rovers, 3-1. Their best FA Cup performance, however, came in the 1970 FA Cup when they reached the Third Round. They beat Reading (1-0) and Hendon (2-0) before losing 1-0 to Northampton Town in Round Three, with a crowd of 4,000 witnessing the game.

This will be the Blues 115th game in the competition. Leiston first played in the FA Cup in 1919, and won their first game in the competition a year later, in 1920, at Clacton Town. Leiston have now played over 60 games in the FA Cup since 2004, after having not played in it since 1958.

If Saturday’s game ends in a draw, the Blues will host the replay back in Suffolk on Tuesday evening.

Chris Wigger’s side are due to play at Bury Town FC in the Suffolk Premier Cup on Tuesday night before heading to Barwell (Sat 21st Sep) and Bedford Town (Tues 24th Sep).
