Premier Cup: Lowestoft hold upper hand, but can Leiston level it up?

Michael Bacon25 Nov 2024 - 12:15

Leiston & Lowestoft clash at Victory Road on Tuesday night in the Suffolk Premier Cup. DAVE REES looks at previous Premier Cup games between the two.

THE RIVALRY between Leiston and Lowestoft Town stretches back more than two centuries.

But rivalries in the Suffolk Premier Cup, the counties' top cup competition, is barely more than two decades old. The teams have only met seven times in this competition ahead of this week's clash. It's the Trawlerboys who hold a slight upper hand.

By the time Leiston and Lowestoft Town first locked horns in the Suffolk Premier Cup, Lowestoft had already lifted the coveted trophy eight times, their first triumph coming in 1967 and victory over Stowmarket Town.

Leiston’s first foray into the competition came in the 1986/87 season where, after beating Brantham Athletic 1-0 in a replay courtesy of a Paul Addy goal, they were beaten in the semi-final by Felixstowe Town, at the home of the Seasiders.

Leiston had to wait 17 years for another crack at the Premier Cup and, two years later in 2006, they first faced their East Suffolk rivals, and what a first meeting it was - a final appearance at Portman Road.

In a fantastic tie the Trawlerboys edged home 3-2 after extra-time. Leiston twice lead through Lee McGlone (18 minutes) and player/manager Glen Driver (100 minutes). But Gary McGhee added to his 81st-minute equaliser with a last-gasp winner after Ali McKenna had levelled in the 111th minute.

It was only two years later Leiston gained revenge over Lowestoft as a single Luke Eagle goal won the semi-final at Woodbridge Town. Sadly for Blues fans, Leiston went on to lose the final.

In October 2010 the two sides met again, the higher-ranked Lowestoft winning 2-0 at Victory Road, Matt Nolan and Adrian Forbes the scorers for the visitors.

Five years passed before the two met once more and Leiston suffered a semi-final defeat to the then Conference North Lowestoft at the home of Kirkley & Pakefield, Bradley Woods-Garness with the late winner.

The following season, 2016, the Trawlerboys won what has so far been the last of their 13 Suffolk Premier Cups and it was Leiston who were on the receiving end, the National League North side winning 3-1 in the final at Portman Road. Danny Crow, Joe Marsden (penalty) and Michael Spillane the Trawlerboys' scorers, with Leon Ottley-Gooch getting the Leiston consolation.

Lowestoft certainly were holding the upper hand at this stage, but the last two Premier Cup clashes between the two sides have seen Leiston triumphant, with both occasions the ties going to penalties after 1-1 draws.

In 2019 it ended 1-1 after 90 minutes at Victory Road after Travis Cole and Byron Lawrence had exchanged goals, Leiston winning 3-2 from the spot kicks. And last season Leiston won 5-4 on penalties at Crown Meadow in what was the first-ever meeting between the sides where Leiston were the higher-ranked team. Joseph Chidyausiku opened the scoring in the 36th minute for Leiston but the hosts sent the tie straight to penalties with a Harvey Sayer penalty 11 minutes from time, before Leiston's penalty triumph.

So, Lowestoft Town hold a slight advantage over Leiston over the seven ties played, can Leiston level it up on Tuesday night?
