Adam Bailey-Dennis knows Leiston’s huge clash at Tamworth tomorrow is ‘a promotion six-pointer’.
The former Colchester United and Braintree defender has been part of an impressive Blues squad who are now potentially just two games away from promotion to National League Step 2 football.
And although it’s not in their own hands, as Coalville lead the division, it would certainly be a whole lot closer to being so should the Blues (currently in second place in the Southern League Premier Central Division) beat the third-placed Lambs tomorrow, kick-off 3pm.
“It’s a massive game for both teams. A promotion six-pointer if you like,” 32-year-old Adam said.
“The winner is in with a real chance of automatic promotion and with that all to play for. Both of us are in the play-offs anyhow.
“There will be a huge crowd, they are well supported, they’re a big club, and for us, and some of our younger players, it’s pressure but it’s also a great rehearsal for the play-offs if that’s where we end up.
“Tamworth are big, strong and direct. It will be a real football match.”
Adam is one of several current Leiston players who have played at a higher level.
He’s a key part of the Blues jigsaw, as he brings all his know-how to younger players in the squad.
“It’s fantastic to be part of this Leiston project,” he said.
“I’ve been at Leiston a few seasons now. It was mission to stay up when I first came, then Covid hit, lots of players came and went, and now the managers have got it right with some good recruitment in the summer.
“I read a few articles before the season started about how we will be what, mid-table, 17th, 18th, will concede too many goals, etc. So, it has been nice to prove a few people wrong and we go into the last two weeks in with a chance of winning the title, if we win at Tamworth.”
Bailey-Dennis mentioned good recruitment and praised Blues bosses Darren Eadie and Chris Wigger for making some astute signings in the summer. Darren and Chris this week signed a new three-year deal at Victory Road.
“A lot of credit must go to the management for the players they have brought in, getting that little bit of experience into the squad,” Adam added.
“Everyone has seen our young players, good young players and now that experience has added to it.
“Look at our back three or four, however we play, it’s quite an experienced group. Then there is a lot of young legs, youthful quality in midfield and attack. I would think we are one of the fittest teams in the league with that balance.”
The league table shows Coalville leading the way on 83 points, with three games to play. Leiston have 82 points with two to play and Tamworth have 80, with three to play.
It makes tomorrow’s game between the Lambs and the Blues huge. Coalville travel to Stratford.
